Captains Information

Congratulations!  You are the captain of your Savannah Tennis League team for the season!  This page has been put together to make your transition less stressful and to provide 'one-stop-shopping' for Frequently Asked Questions, Top Dog Instructions, etc.

First - If you are a new captain, please notify your
level coordinator and the webmaster ASAP.

Frequently Asked Questions...

What does a captain do?
Good question!  As far as the STL (Savannah Tennis League) is concerned, you are the coordinator and score reporter for your team.  You distribute information concerning matches, updates, rosters, rule changes, etc. to your teammates either at clinic or via email or snail mail.  You should check the Savannah Tennis League website and your email frequently during your tenure to keep abreast of any announcements during the season.
A captain is responsible for adding a new member to their roster and to the Top Dog site using the Online Roster Submission Instructions.  Further updates of addresses, phone numbers and email addresses for your teammates should be handled individually by them.  If you have a new player to the league, they must fill out a Player Profile Form (see below).
There is a mandatory captains meeting every season prior to the first match.  You should bring your printed roster and one check for your entire team to this meeting.
Captains and co-captains have the same privileges on Top Dog, so if you are unable to perform a duty during your tenure, your co-captain should be ready to fill in.

Do I have to have a computer or email address to be a captain?
We use the Top Dog site for score reporting.  Captains must have an email address to log in to Top Dog to report scores.  Fortunately all the tennis facilities used by the STL now have computer access at the facility, so computer ownership is optional.  Please keep your email address current on the Top Dog Site and notify your
level coordinator if it changes mid-season.

I have a problem!  Who do I contact?
You should contact your level coordinator.

I have a new player for my team.  What steps do I take to get them registered?
You should fill out the Player Profile Form and submit it at the captains meeting or PRIOR to their first match if they are a mid-season addition.  Teams with less than 10 members can add at any time during the season (up to 10 max.; C-2 level can add any time during the season with no limit).  Forms should be submitted to your level coordinator.  If a player is added after the captains meeting, a check for the dues (non-prorated and non-refundable) should be submitted to the Treasurer PRIOR to their first match.  If you need to add a player after the drop/add deadline, please contact the This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. What is 'luck of draw'?
The length of our season dictates how many times each team plays another during the season.  Some levels will play each team twice, some will play each team once and some will have a "luck of draw" and play every team once and some teams twice.  Why?  If the levels with 7 or 8 teams only played each team once, then the season would be too short; if they played each team twice, then the season would be too long.  To remedy this the STL uses a 'luck of draw' technique.  When a team plays a "luck of draw" on this level, they can earn up to 4 points total between the two matches.  For example:
Match 1   Team A vs. Team C  Team A wins 3 points and Team C wins 1
Match 2   Team A vs. Team C  Team A wins 4 points and Team C wins 0
Result:  Team A will receive 4 points total and Team C will win 1 point total.  The points are not combined, but the best score is used regardless.  You must check the website
Standings page to keep up with luck of draw scoring.  Top Dog does not calculate these points.
